ForestPaths partners join International Summer School on natural disturbances
Researchers, forestry professionals and 18 PhD students from 10 universities came together for an intensive week at the Euroleague of Life Sciences Universities International Summer School on Natural Disturbances and Restoration Activities in European Forests. The event was held May 10-16 and was co-organised by Wageningen University & Research and the University of Tuscia.
The programme tackled pressing questions around forest adaptation to large-scale disturbances and how sudden disturbance events can inform restoration strategies.
ForestPaths partners Gert-Jan Nabuurs and Alba Viana-Soto were among the lecturers. The EFISCEN-Space model was put to work in hands-on sessions, allowing participants to explore how forests might develop under different management and climate scenarios. The week also touched on climate-smart restoration, tree diversity and resilience, and the potential of rewilding.
Participants had the opportunity to visit sites affected by the historic 2018 VAIA Storm, gaining first-hand insights into the challenges of salvage logging and forest restoration in heavily impacted areas.
